The multiple culture identity project
There was an Englishman, an Australian and an Irishman...
Kelly, who holds three passports, deconstructs himself in this project by unpacking his three cultural identities into their component parts; an Englishman, an Australian and an Irishman.
In doing so, Kelly invites us to play a post-modernist game of 'bricolage identity construction' in reverse, peeling away layers of the cultural onion until nothing is left. Or is there?
Questioning the essentialist notion of cultural identity, we are drawn to the idea of identity as combinatory play, and of creativity as the juxtaposition of contradiction. In doing so, Kelly playfully fuses contradictions and experience into a culture-jamming mash-up of images and materials to form this project entitled 'There was an Englishman, an Australian and an Irishman...'
